The school holidays are officially on! Looking for ways to keep your kids entertained over the next few weeks? Sweet and savoury waffles, sandwich press magic or blenders creations, no matter what time of the day; breakfast, snack time or dessert, the kids can whip up these recipes in a matter of minutes. Older kids like teenagers can make the below recipes on their own, however it is highly recommended that younger kids have adult supervision during the making of these dishes.

Sweet & Savoury Waffles

Waffles with ice cream or eggs and bacon, whatever they’re craving, making it is easy with Sunbeam’s Shade Select Vertical Waffle Maker. Sweet Waffles Recipe
Makes 2 waffles
Prep Time: 10 minutes

Browning Setting

  • Medium or medium high

Ingredients

  • 1 cup plain flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 2 Tbsp caster sugar
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1½ Tbsp unsalted butter, melted

Method

  1. Preheat the Sunbeam waffle maker by plugging it in and selecting your shade preference.
  2. In a large bowl, sift together flour, baking powder, sugar and salt.
  3. In a jug, whisk together egg and milk, add to flour mix and whisk until combined, do not over mix. Stir in melted butter.
  4. Fill the cup measure to the top with batter and carefully pour into the top of the machine.
  5. Once the waffle is cooked, serve immediately with your favourite topping.

Savoury Waffles Recipe
Makes 2 waffles

  • 1 egg

COOK’S TIP

Sandwich Press Secrets

It’s no secret that with some heat, making a hot and delicious snack is like child’s play. And with Sunbeam’s Café Style 6-Slice Sandwich Press, you and the kids can whip up creations like Big Mac-Style Burgers or a Caramel and Biscoff Dessert Pizza. Lunch: Big Mac-Style Burgers
Makes 2 burgers
Prep Time: 2 minutes
Cook Time: 15 minutes

Ingredients

  • 2 sesame seed burger buns, split into 3 equal sized slices
  • 4 beef burger patties
  • 2 large iceberg lettuce leaves
  • 4 cheese slices
  • â…“ cup burger sauce
  • 8 pickle slices (optional)

Method

  1. Turn on the Sunbeam Café Style 2-Slice Sandwich Press & Maker. Toast your bun halves for 2 minutes, cut side down and repeat with remaining buns.
  2. When the buns are finished toasting, add two beef burger patties to the sandwich press, close and lock the lid and cook, 5 minutes. While the patties are cooking, finely shred your lettuce.
  3. Open the lid and add a slice of cheese to the top of your burger, then close and lock the lid so it is hovering just above the cheese. Cook until the cheese melts, 2 minutes.
  4. Repeat with the remaining burger patties and cheese.
  5. Layer your burgers by spreading a tablespoon of burger sauce on your bottom burger bun, then top with lettuce, pickle slices (if using), meat patty and then the middle burger bun slice. Repeat with burger sauce, lettuce, pickles, patty and then the final top bun.

COOK’S TIP

If you can’t find burger sauce at the shops, you can make your own by combining ¼ cup mayo, 1 Tbsp ketchup, 1 tsp mustard, ½ tsp sugar, ½ tsp white vinegar in a medium bowl.

Snack/Dessert: Caramel Banana & Biscoff Dessert Pizza
Serves 4
Prep Time: 2 minutes
Cook Time: 8 minutes

Ingredients

  • 125g Caramilk cream cheese (caramel flavoured cream cheese)
  • 25cm round pizza base
  • 1 banana, sliced into coins
  • 2 Oreo cookies, crushed
  • ½ cup mini marshmallows
  • 1 Tbsp smooth Biscoff spread

Method

  1. Turn on the Sunbeam Café Style 6-Slice Sandwich Press & Maker.
  2. Using a small offset spatula or metal spoon, spread the Caramilk cream cheese onto the pizza base. If the cream cheese is hard to spread, zap it in the microwave for 10 second bursts to soften in a microwave-safe bowl.
  3. Top the pizza with the banana, crushed Oreo biscuits and mini marshmallows. Place onto the sandwich press. Close and lock the lid, so it is hovering just above the marshmallows. Cook, until marshmallows are melted and pizza base is warmed through, 6 minutes.
  4. While the pizza is cooking, spoon the Biscoff spread into a microwave safe small bowl and microwave for 10 second bursts, until pourable.
  5. Remove the dessert pizza from the sandwich press to a cutting board and drizzle with the warm Biscoff. Serve and enjoy!

COOK’S TIP
Caramilk cream cheese is sold in 250g tubs at Coles and other supermarkets. This recipe uses half a tub.

Chocolate Shake
Serves 2

Ingredients

  • 400mL milk
  • 2 scoops chocolate ice cream
  • 4 tbsp chocolate syrup

Method

  1. Put all ingredients into the Blender jug. Blend at low speed for 10 seconds, then high speed for 10 seconds.
  2. Divide into 2 serving glasses and serve.

Banana Nut Smoothie
Serves 2

Ingredients

  • 150g hazelnut yoghurt
  • 1 large banana, roughly chopped
  • 200mL milk
  • 6 ice cubes

Method

  1. Put all ingredients into the Blender jug, ice cubes last. Blend at low speed for 10 seconds, then high speed for 5 seconds.
  2. Divide into 2 serving glasses and serve.

Savoury Cheese Balls
Makes 20

Ingredients

  • 250g soft cream cheese
  • ½ cup parmesan cheese, grated
  • 2 tbsp spring onion, chopped
  • 1 tbsp worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 tbsp mixed herbs
  • ½ tsp chilli flakes
  • Pepper, to taste
  • 1 tbsp sour cream
  • Chopped mixed nuts, toasted

Method

  1. Scoop cheese into the Blender jug. Add parmesan cheese, spring onion, worcestershire sauce, lemon juice, herbs, chilli and pepper to the Blender jug.
  2. Blend lightly at low speed and add sour cream to lighten mixture. Blend at low speed until smooth.
  3. Scoop into a bowl and chill until firm enough to handle easily.
  4. Roll into walnut sized balls and then roll each in chopped nuts.
  5. Serve on a platter with crackers, grapes and dried fruits.
